Dobby shows up--a little house elf. He causes disaster by trying to help Harry. Voldimort is using a diary to destroy his school. The diary controls Ginny. It makes her hang Mrs. Norris after the basilisk paralyzed her. The basilisk drags Ginny into the Chamber of Secrets. Harry saves the world in this book.by destroying the magic diary.
The theme is breaking the rules can solve problems. For instance, Harry Potter had to get into the forbidden hall or he'd never figure out about the big dog.

I'm not sure that I agree that the theme is breaking the rules can solve problems but that does seem to be an aspect of the story. To me, it seems more that friends working together can solve problems is the greater theme.
