Imagine going back in time with the Sumerians. Imagine being back in time with people traveling from place to place. They had no permanent homes. Then Sumerians found great land to make villages into cities. They dug trenches to irrigate which led to an abundance of food which gave them more time to create things like writing.
The land in Sumer flooded a lot. The Sumerians grew crops but the crops got covered in salt from the river. Sumerians then built levies which kept the water from flooding and destroying their crops. Then they controlled the flood to their crop with ditches around the fields. Also, the ditches helped keep the plants from drowning. This is how the Sumerians invented irrigation.
Irrigation led to more food. The Sumerians planted fields of wheat and barley. They also planted lots of date trees. They grew vegetables like those we eat today for instance, cucumbers, onions, and other things. Thanks to irrigation, the food surplus got them on their feet. More food gave them more time to do other things besides farming.
More food led to great things. For instance, Sumerian writing was the first full-fledged writing. It shows that they mapped the stars. Their writing shows they used a form of counting. They used round cylinders with carvings on them to sign a tablet. Their writing created the beginning of the writing that you use now.
Irrigation led to food spurt which led to a great form of writing. Isn't it interesting how they went from being nomads to being a great civilization? Their civilization led to our writing and our government today.

Malachi, your writing is getting smoother and so much longer. Who would have thought you could write such a long essay just a few months ago?
ReplyDeleteWow, I like it. Sounds like you did a lot of research.
