The Meerkat looks like a weasel because they’re long and skinny. They are 10” tall or more. They weigh 1.5 pounds. They dig with their ears folded.
Where They Live:

Group Members:
They have 3 main members of the pack-- alpha male, alpha female, beta male. They live in groups of 15 and more. Each meerkat has a job. They live in groups. They like to play.
Sometimes they stand as a group and face the sunset. No one quite knows why. The taller ones are in the back. The shorter ones are in the front---kind of like they are posing for a picture.
Special Characteristics:
Their eyes are like built in sunglasses so they can stare across the plains. The black rings around their eyes prevent glare. Their eyes also have an extra lid called a nititating membrane. It works like a windshield wiper to remove sand from their eyes. They can stare in the sun and not be blinded and look for predators.
Reproduction:
In a litter, there are 5 or more pups. Pups nurse from all mothers. Mothers can nurse while standing. Pups stay in the den for 41 days.
Intelligence:
Meerkats are some of the smartest animals in the animal kingdom. They have separate jobs. They have their own language. They have 70 different entrances to their hole in case they get trapped. There is a dirt mound around each entrance. They are very alert and also have lookouts. They are very hard to catch. Meerkats are one of the smartest rodents in the world. They dig tunnel after tunnel and room after room. They are active by day, but they do have a night watch.
Style of Feeding:
Meerkats are good hunters. Their common prey are small lizards, ant babies, fruit, eggs, birds, snakes, rodents, grasshoppers, crickets, and worms.
