The Warrior

Matthias was born a clumsy field mouse and died a warrior. At the beginning of the story, Abbot Mortimer saw him with his sandals twice as big as his feet. When Matthias stumbled into him, he made sure that Matthias got a pair that fit him. There is a feast in the story and at the feast Matthias takes care of my two favorite characters, Tim and Tess, the twin church mice. They're so cute.
 
This is an awesome book. It says that Mossflower, the country around Redwall, is a pretty place. Redwall is Matthias's home. Matthias and a bunch of shrews go to find the Sword of Martin. The shrews are mean but funny. My favorite part is when they're in the snake den. Asmodeus is the evil snake that took Martin's sword. I like this part because Asmodeus tries to hypnotize Matthias, but it doesn't work.

Cluny is the main bad guy, a big rat with a long whip like tail with poisonous barbs on it. He thinks the sword of Martin is in Redwall so he attacks it repeatedly but each time he can never win. Most people are so frightened of him they don't really fight. The soldiers of Redwall fight back under the command of Matthias and Basil the hare and the badger. Cluny got so mad once he started throwing his men at the good guys. Poor Cluny, even though he's a savage, you got to be sorry for the way he died. He was savagely crushed by a grandfather bell.

I love this book. It is only for children eight and older. It's a bit gory. It's got some hard words. Next I will read Rakkety Tam.

three friends

Three Friends

Every person needs trustworthy, funny and creative friends. You need these types of friends especially when you’re the youngest in the class. Three of my friends are Lenin, Jonathan and Maddy. each of them has one of these qualities.


Lenin is a good friend of mine. He and I know games that the other one will like. We have identical minds. We both like video games. He comes to my house every Wednesday after school and we play all break long. It’s good to have a friend you trust.


Jonathan is a funny person. One time he put a bunch of ponytails in his hair. He has so many Legos I could die. The first time I went to his house I went screaming out the front door because of all the Legos. I like to go to his house. I’ve known him so long. I’ve known Jonathan since playgroup. It’s good to have a funny friend.


Maddy is very creative. She makes many games. We like to play games like Dream State and Mutants. Dream State is a game where you take portals into the different dimensions. Mutants is a game where you make your own Xman. It’s good to have a friend that is creative.


I have many more friends than these--Kaliana, Alisha, Emi and many others. Being small you need many people to be your friend. Life is hard but easier if you have these types of friends.

This is a great book because it's fiction and it's Scifi. My favorite part is when the goblin blows up. My favorite character is probably Mulch Diggums or Foaly.  I also like the part when they have to dig through Mulch's manure.

The main characters are Artemis, Butler, Juliet, Foaly the centaur, Mulch Diggums, Root and Holly. Artemis is a young teenager with the best IQ in Europe. He goes to a school called Saint Bartleby's school for smart kids. His father was lost and his body guard Butler protects him now.  Artemis robs the fairies of their precious gold. Butler is strong and could find a thousand ways to kill you with his fists. His uncle died with Artemis's dad. Artemis, Sr., lived and was captured by a gang of Russians that blew up the ship that Artemis, Sr., was on. He had no way on escaping with one missing leg.

Fascinating Animals

Some people like different types of animals such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and arachnids. My personal top three favorites are reptiles, mammals, and arachnids. I like almost any animal. But I especially like scaley, creepy, crawly creatures and ones that go to any extreme to survive. My three favorite animals are garter snakes, black panthers and king cobras.

Garter snakes, I used to be afraid of them but now I love them. The almost perfect golden, almost silken cords down their backs ripple vigorously as they slide through the grass. There are many around my house. They like to keep their body temperature between 72-88 degrees F. Last Easter, I caught two. The first peed on me. Most people don’t know how to handle Garter snakes, but I do.

Black Panthers are slender, beautiful and cute. That’s how I see them. I mean look at this guy. Some people call them killing machines but not me.  
I guess I could understand being afraid of this night stalker below but it’s still really not that vicious. With that silky black fur, they can flash through the night. Only sharp yellow eyes give you a hint of its presence. We should treat them right. I like King Cobras. They are very cool. My cousin’s friend’s husband has a pet one. He let me hold it. It was heavy. I was afraid at first. Mainly I was afraid because I knew that their poison was strong enough to kill an elephant. Do you see why I like them? No, maybe this will help.
These creatures are important to the world around us. They help with rat problems, fertilisation and mice. I think animals are cool such as these. What are your favorite animals.

The Zoo by Malachi church

The Zoo and The Lorax

Malachi Church, Lenin Norris, Jonathan Archibold, Alisha Homewood and our teacher Kym Kemp went to the zoo on the way to the Arcata science fair because we hoped to see the red pandas. We did not see them except for me and I just saw the tip of his nose. Friday, March 17, 2012 was the day of the field trip to the science fair.



The spider monkeys were funny. The zoo keeper was trying to transfer them into a feeding cage. The girl monkey went in but the two boys were playing on ropes and were afraid to go in. My favorite creature was either the turtles or the gray foxes. Our teacher said her favorite was the gray fox. Alisha said her favorite was the sneaky black bear. Lenin's favorites were the spider monkeys.



After the science fair, we voted for a movie we wanted to see. Everyone picked the Lorax excepted Alisha. She went with the older girls. The Lorax was a funny little comedy. It had rock and roll in it but some parts were too cute for words. My mom said her favorite character was the Grandma and I liked her too. You should watch it.



After the movie, we were really tired. We got in the car and started home. Lenin kept saying that we should eat diner in Fortuna but my mom said no. Then Lenin kept whispering about Burger King and about how good its burgers are. We dropped him off at his dad's house. Then we got home and we had a small dinner because it was late. We got in bed and I slept well. The next morning was like the usual slow but joyful morning. Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal for breakfast again and a big lunch of cheese sandwich. It was really hot that afternoon. Basically, all we talked about was the field trip that morning. It was a good day.

When water evaporates, it leaves salt behind. Which is usually washed away by rain. However, if there is not much rain, salt will build up and kill plants. So some plants have adapted to brine. There are many ways for plants to adapt to brine.

Mangrove swamps are very salty areas in tropical regions. They are found near the coast. There are tons of salt tolerant shrubs and ferns in mangrove swamps. Pines and palm trees are also very common in the swamp but most of all mangroves are there. You can find these swamps around the equator.

Mangroves are a great refuge for marine life because of their prop roots. Prop roots are like those stakes that hold up tents. The animals live there for the high concentration of nutrients. The marine life can hide from predators and the predators can hide can hide from the prey and snatch them from out of the gloom with other prey not noticing.  Isn't that cool?

Plants have to use special abilities to survive in mangrove swamps. Red mangrove (Rhizophera mangle) has waxy roots to keep the salt out. The salt that gets through gets dumped with the dead leaves. White mangroves take the salt into the leaves and squeezes it out. The leaves get covered with little white flakes which is the reasoning for the name. These types of plants are called Halophytes. Halophytes are plants that are adapted to salty conditions. Saltwater has about 40 grams per litre (g/l) of salt in it usually. Halophytes actually like to grow near salt water. There are other plants that have other ways of dealing with salt.

Mangroves roots are like filters cleaning out the salt but letting the water get in. Mangroves need tides to throw the excess salt away. There are four different kinds of mangrove roots knee roots, prop roots, buttress roots and pencil roots. The prop roots help protect marine life. The knee roots, buttress roots and pencil roots take in oxygen and support the tree as well as feed it. Mangroves stick their roots out of the ground for protection from the salt.  Mangroves can also stop erosion with their thick and sturdy roots. 

Mangroves do not do very well in fresh water but they do thrive in saltwater.  Red mangroves like to live in harsh saline soil of up to 60-65 parts per thousand (ppt). For black and white mangroves, 90 parts per thousand. This is something that regular plants can't do.  Is this awesome? That's what I think anyway.

Most plants don't survive in mangrove swamps. At the most there are 100 plant species in one swamp. It can go down to only two species because of the salt water.  Non-Halophytes can not thrive there.  

Mangroves aren't the only Halophytes. These are different Halophytes. These kinds of plants often get rid of salt through their leaves. Did you know that asparagus and beets are Halophytes? Those are just a few of them.  

There are places where salt resistant plants are needed. Those places are usually near the coast or where salt is used to remove snow on the roads. If we did not have salt resistant plants there would be no asparagus or beets and there would be huge areas with no plant life at all. We are lucky that the plants adapted.
